Mental health is still a neglected area, despite the fact that more than 450 million people suffer from some form of mental illness or disorder.

Mental health is a human right. It is not an optional extra. Yet, millions of people suffer in silence, without treatment or even recognition that anything is wrong.

Many people suffer from mental disorders and do not get the treatment they need. The vast majority have no access to treatment. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29yearolds worldwide. Over 80% of suicides are in low and middleincome countries.

Depression is also the leading cause of disability in the world. It affects more than 120 million people of all ages.

Only one person in five with a mental disorder receives treatment. Treatment for mental disorders focuses on the alleviation of symptoms but does little to tackle the underlying causes.

It is time for action.
